Comprehending nearly one hundred entries is just a chance of learning and sorting for me.

1.Students' overall creation, while predicting the arrival of a new era, shows their perception of history, respect for tradition and imagination of trend. Its diversity and richness are amazing. Most of their works get rid of common grand narrative、tangible insubstantial or imitative shift seen in previous entries.Creation consciously pays attention to "local", interprets the endogenous relationship between architecture, public art and rural areas.Similarly, surpassing the blueprint, expressing daily life and enjoying the physical and mental pleasure of nature have become their creative path.

2.The entries gave full play to the spiritual and physical attributes of bamboo, and consciously avoided the common "classics" of bamboo structure in the form of design. Some works have consciously expressed the construction aesthetics, found the visual experience brought by the "light" in the construction, found the dimensional hearing from the sound waves of the "wind", and obtained the interactive relationship between people, things and space in the sense of touch. If we want to innovate the rural space with texture, there is no doubt that these works have brought greater possibilities for the progress of construction, craftmanship and technology.

3.Another major breakthrough lies in the students' works. While contributing to an open mind, the works show sufficient respect for the diversity of ecological types. They are creating an interdependent overall relationship between rural environment and culture, and at the same time achieving a goal—how to transform architecture and public art into rural cultural ecology. The students' works clearly convey the spatial awareness of rural communities, and endow these specific spaces with culture, memory and sociality —public participation and experience.

I would like to thank Mr. Ge, the Organizing Committee and the judges for successfully completing today's evaluation procedure.I have a strong feeling that the level of this competition is very high. From another perspective, I think the award-winning works selected today are not the final result, or the ranking is not very important.I think this award process is quite worthy of our aftertaste. When I looked back at the entries, I found that the participating units had a unique understanding of the use of bamboo, material properties, etc., and showed obvious creative expression, openness and diversity. This is the overall appearance of this competition. In today's review, our judges put those works that are considered mediocre and normal at the back, and selected some works that may not be mature and may not be smooth in the implementation process. So I would say that today's selection is a process, not a result. Maybe the selected works will encounter great challenges in the implementation process, but it is a guide.  Whether it is the public art group or the architectural group, we can see the open possibilities of material application. We can not only heat bend the bamboo, but also string them together. We can use it as enclosure material or support material, or as its unique connection mode, etc. I think we have taken a very important step in the cognition and understanding of materials, but as Mr. Fanghai said, this aspect is a weak link in our current teaching. It can be seen that students are rather astringent in this aspect, but this is not a problem. These are precisely the purpose of our competition. The competition can promote and inspire students and stimulate their creativity.I am looking forward to the next process and I think this process is worth looking forward to but also full of challenges.

My overall feeling is that the quality of the entries presented by students in an innovative way is good, and the entries are artistic and innovative. Let me put forward some ideas. I think this competition is actually a bamboo construction competition. Although some works have been selected, I feel it will be difficult in the actual construction process. Can students have a 1:1 presentation of the key construction nodes, not all of them, just 1 or 2 nodes, showing how the materials are connected? It's not difficult for students and can be recorded with real photos.

I think this competition encourages students to think from many aspects, which is characterized by challenging innovation and allowing students to think from the relationship between materials, structure and the environment. Many entries have the possibility of breakthrough and innovation, and its significance lies in transformation.

What I feel deeply is that the research on materials in our teaching is still very lacking. How to make up the content of this aspect in the teaching process, this competition gives us an alarm and hint. This is a big defect in our architectural design and there is a big gap with Europe, the United States and Japan. The time of this competition is tight, and there are all kinds of creativity, but how to put them into practice is a problem worthy of discussion and experiment.

I was very impressed by the entries of this competition. Many of them are very interesting and the evaluation is challenging. As an overseas consultant of the competition, I am very honored to cooperate with GE Qiantao studio and its team. We have jointly invited many universities around the world to participate in the competition. I think this competition is of positive significance. The forms of entries are diverse, the construction methods are different, and the drawing methods of submissions are also different. Participants can learn from each other. As for the evaluation, it is mainly considered from the aspects of innovativeness, implementability, reasonability and art performance. Innovativeness and implementability are difficult for students, because they both need some experience in bamboo application and construction. Reasonability is also very important. In my review, I considered the place, size, local culture, different situation and so on. Although art performance only accounts for 10% of the score, it is very important. It needs to balance the previous elements in order to make it successful. I think the evaluation criteria are concise and professional.

It has been very exciting to see such interest and great response to this bamboo architectural challenge. I deeply enjoyed going through all the creative, diverse, and original responses that we’ve received for the multiple sites on which we’re going to build bamboo projects soon. Thank you to all the people that have applied to the competition: it’s been a great experience to see your creative work on display.

This competition is very significant because it is rather rare globally to have a competition in which participants have the opportunity to see their design proposals actually getting built. There is an increasing need today for alternative, more sustainable construction materials across the world and bamboo would be a great answer to our current environmental challenge. While bamboo is becoming increasingly popular, it is still frequently misunderstood and remains underrepresented in the world of architecture. To promote sustainable construction, and with that bamboo architecture, one of the first things needed are demonstrations of its potential through good design. The main ambition of this competition is precisely that: to demonstrate how bamboo can produce innovative, functional and great architecture and urban interventions.

We received a large number of submissions and it was quite a challenge for the judging panel to work our way through all the material. The elements I was looking for were “originality”: to have a new idea for a bamboo application; “innovation”: what are the innovative qualities that designers are pushing for and are they coming up with something unique and peculiar; and “buildability”: although you can do many things with bamboo that you cannot do with other materials like steel or stone, you cannot do everything, so for certain projects we really had to be imaginative to figure out how we would realise them. For the final, winning projects, we are very confident that, once we will put all the skill and craftsmanship together from the Anji building team, we’ll be able to have a successful end result. But for me, personally, the most important element I was looking for was “affect”: projects that are touching because they tell a story that is unique to bamboo in addition to these practical constraints; projects that show a highly qualitative spatial and experiential outcome; projects that will become places one would want to go to and come back to, to experience them first-hand.

I want to congratulate the winners who have been shortlisted for final production: I look forward to seeing your final structures built and to coming to Anji in person to visit them in person once the pandemic is over.

I also want to thank the competition organisation team for the invitation to be part of this and for making this possible, and the participants and winners for their great work. Congratulations!

When I reflect on my experience as a judge for this competition, the first thing that came to mind was how impressed I was by the high quality of suggestions by the students and by realities both architecture and art installation seem to have.

I was also touched by the fact that many students captured and utilized the characteristics of the bamboo in so many different ways. For example, the homogeneous configuration and the strong yet flexible characteristics. Moreover, suggestions through structures made of natural bamboo material seem to be somewhat ironical professions against standardized urban scenes created by modern industrial products. This made this competition even more interesting. The students' projects helped me think about how important it is for us to create structures made of natural materials in the age to come.

While judging, I prioritize designs that create new relationships, by utilizing the bamboo’s characteristics, between the artificial and the natural in architectural forms, structures, works, locations, and so on. I appreciated designs that create interactive relations that help structures enrich the surrounding environment. I always try to remember the importance of designing from both sides of modern digital technology and human analog perception. This will allow us to discover new architectural methods for the future and bring with it new challenges to overcome. Architectural life depends on combinations of the materials we use and details we apply.

Therefore, for my last remarks, I would like to challenge all students to keep thinking about how bamboo structures will continue to endure over time. As materials that grow rapidly, bamboo structures will be able to remain at each location throughout the years by replacing old bamboo with new one. Please enjoy pondering how structures made of bamboo will be able to keep remaining in people’s memories for a long time.

I would like to thank the deans and Mr. Ge for doing so much work for this competition.I can feel the promotion of this competition in our future teaching.I think this is not a general competition. It is exploring the revitalization and self-confidence of local culture, especially in Anji's processing and future application of reconsolidated bamboo . Foreign architects use reconsolidated bamboo more in public buildings. At present, the use of raw bamboo in buildings is more common, but in Anji, we can see that through this Bamboo Architectural Competition, it actually promotes the cognition and understanding of the bamboo industry.
