INTRO

Environment and Market 01 is a Year 2 module introducing students to the principles of commercial space design – a space enabled to carry out market activities with a strong emphasis on advertising and effective customer engagement. This year, students were asked to choose their preferred brand and, through careful research and analysis, they worked towards the design of a small-scale installation, a 5m x 5m booth, to meaningfully integrate the research findings into a product showcase situated fictionally at Hall A2 of the Xiamen Fliport C&E Centre in Xiamen.

Particular focus was put on spatial quality, materiality, structure, and sustainability, with careful consideration of disassembly and reuse at the end of the exhibition lifecycle. Successful proposals would establish a meaningful dialogue between the brand and the spatial design, representing and responding to the needs and expectations of both the client and the customers.

The module was delivered twice a week through a collaborative teaching structure involving three faculty members and one teaching instructor. Each week, students received a shared lecture session followed by a workshop and one tutorial session that allowed more individual and tailored interaction. This format ensured a coherent pedagogical framework while allowing for more focused, personalised guidance. It also fostered internal dialogue among staff and reflective teaching practice.

Lecture sessions introduced a wide range of themes relevant to commercial space design, including branding, advertising, digital immersive tools, virtual reality, sustainability, and materiality. Lecture delivery rotated among staff and was enriched by field trips such as the visit to JOMOO Headquarters, China’s top sanitaryware company, where students received first-hand experience with real commercial scenarios. This exchange encouraged cross-institutional dialogue and exposed students to parallel approaches within environmental design education. The field trip to JOMOO Innovation center offered students insights into early-stage product design and its applications in diverse commercial scenarios, extending the learning dimensions of the course.

The studio followed a clear design trajectory – observation, reflection, and drawing – with formative reviews concluding each phase. This structure reinforced design as an iterative process, encouraging critical understanding of the chosen brand before formalising architectural responses. Throughout the semester, students demonstrated strong commitment, developing proposals while acquiring skills in CAD, 3D modelling, and physical modelling.
