Against the dual backdrop of the digital age and rapid urbanization, the “lack of a sense of place” and “crisis of belonging” among highly mobile urban migrants have become increasingly prominent. Taking Jiuting in Songjiang District, Shanghai—a typical “migrant town”—as its research site, this project aims to explore how to construct a new type of museum, a “urban memory repository,” through interior space design. Through literature reviews and case studies, the research proposes a core design philosophy for participatory museums, treating space itself as a dynamic narrative medium to achieve the preservation of urban memory, the co-creation of collective narratives, and the evocation of emotional resonance within the physical space. This project not only addresses the social issue of rebuilding a sense of place for urban migrants but also offers an innovative, human-centered design approach that explores the social role and spatial possibilities of museums in the digital age.

Globalization and urbanization have led to unprecedented levels of human migration, transforming the demographic fabric of cities worldwide. In Shanghai, the impact of urbanization is directly connected with the presence of these demographics: immigrants, seniors, and young migrant workers; in which they face parallel challenges of disconnection within the urban fabric, for which vegetable markets and food banks might pose as a possible solution. This project argues that for these people, vegetable markets are not just commercial spaces but are important infrastructures for cultural preservation, social integration, and food sovereignty & security.
