The Roaming Cuo Project

ZHONG Zhen, Niloofar Amini
As urbanization transforms Jimei Dashe, traditional gucuo (traditional Minnan-style houses) have gradually lost their original function as everyday dwellings and the associated craftsmanship is at risk of being lost due to interrupted transmission. Cultural heritage is increasingly detached from community life, becoming confined to historical memory. Taking space and craftsmanship as dual pathways, this project explores the possibility for heritage to return to everyday life, while addressing the shortage of public space in high-density neighborhoods. Rather than a single instance of spatial renewal, the resulting mechanism creates a replicable network of heritage activation. It reintegrates gucuo into public life and revitalizes traditional crafts through participation, making, and use.

This project responds to the transformational challenges confronting the historical dwellings (gucuo) of Jimei’s Dashe community amid urban renewal. Taking “returning heritage to everyday life” as its central proposition, it explores two intertwined dimensions—spatial renewal and the transmission of traditional building craftsmanship—demonstrating an acute problem awareness and a strong sense of social responsibility.
The design breaks away from the path dependency of conventional heritage conservation, which tends to prioritise static display. Instead, it organically connects the spaces of the historical dwellings, communal public life, and the practice of traditional craftsmanship, shifting cultural heritage from “passive preservation” to “active engagement,” and from “historical memory” into “contemporary lived experience,” thereby achieving an innovative transition from static conservation to living transmission. By constructing a sustainable and replicable network for heritage revitalisation, the proposal not only addresses the pressing shortage of public space in high-density neighborhoods, but also offers a new practical model for the creative transformation and innovative dissemination of traditional culture.
The project reflects rigorous preliminary research, coherent systemic thinking, and accomplished design communication, evidencing both a profound understanding of local cultural context and the capacity to reinterpret it through innovative design strategies. Overall, it represents a meaningful exploration that moves from cultural preservation toward living heritage, and from spatial renewal toward community co-creation, holding significant practical value and exemplary potential.

The project responds to the demolition crisis confronting urban villages driven by industrial upgrading, proposing a new typology of transitional housing for middle-aged and elderly migrant workers who depend heavily on face-to-face social networks. Employing a vertical stacking strategy, the project situates residential units above existing ground-floor informal anchors such as the bustling small eateries. By providing affordable housing whilst simultaneously rebuilding the mutual-aid social networks that underpin employment, the project achieves dual outcomes: spatial reconfiguration and enhanced social resilience.

ZHUANG Ziyi's project offers a thoughtful response to the housing pressures facing migrant workers in Jimei. Rather than treating affordable housing as a purely residential problem, it understands housing as social infrastructure, supporting communication, mutual aid and everyday interaction. Its strength lies in building upon existing local anchors, particularly restaurants, while introducing new accommodation above them. As policy in China increasingly encourages movement away from concrete and steel towards renewable materials, this project is a valuable first attempt at testing what may be possible. Ziyi’s planning was exemplary: she tested ideas with seriousness, independence and strong self-motivation. It was a pleasure to discuss the project with her each week, as there was always something new to develop.

Longzhou “Bridge”: Integrated Design of Longzhou Pool Culture and Ecological Landscape

The project is located in Jimei University Town, Xiamen—an urban village integrating schools and residential areas. Guided by the principle of “enhancing well-being through high-quality development,” my design operates within Jimei’s micro-spatial system to address diverse needs across multiple well-being levels, from physical comfort to social connection and sensory richness.
The project creates a multi-functional public building that offers cultural and ecological spaces for the community, especially students. Based on a cultural and ecological analysis of Longzhou Pool, I propose a design integrating heritage preservation, ecological restoration, and public experience. Dragon boat culture is translated into spatial symbols and activity carriers, while sustainable landscape strategies enhance ecological health and biodiversity. The goal is to create a landmark waterfront space that expresses local cultural identity, offers high-quality recreational experiences, and supports a resilient ecosystem.
Drawing on CS theory, Holling’s Social-Ecological Systems theory, and Christian Norberg-Schulz’s Genius Loci, I develop design strategies through four dimensions: culture, ecology, space, and society, This framework helps identify site characteristics and core tensions, forming the basis for targeted intervention. The integrated strategy weaves together culturally narrative landscapes with bird-friendly ecological habitats. Finally, a complete design process is presented—from conceptual development and master planning to detailed landscape design.

Driven by essentially anti-architectural rhetoric embedded in built form, YANG Yi’s design thesis revitalizes the coastline’s grey infrastructure into an exciting hybrid space that connects ecology, humanities, and programmatic diversity. The proposal endeavors to sustain the localized historical narrative by embracing the traditional hip-roof (wudian) structure alongside vernacular materials. The free-plan configuration, boundless and deeply permeable, skillfully accommodates and interweaves the diverse rhythms of a civic life. Through resilient civic programs inserted into the site, the design counters the waterfront’s fading vitality. Ultimately, leveraging micro-activations and low-impact stewardship of local bird habitats, the architecture restores a harmonious human-nature relationship, subtly promoting residents’ holistic health across its expansive, permeable edges.
