ABOUT THE COURSE

Course Overview

This course examines the paradigm shift in contemporary architecture driven by the emergence of a new infrastructural layer: the Information-Logistics Spatial Infrastructure (ILSI). The ILSI represents a systemic integration of digital information networks and physical logistics, enabling the precise, real-time organization and mobilization of matter and energy. This stands in stark contrast to traditional, static environmental control systems (e.g., water, electricity, HVAC), fundamentally altering how architectural space is conceived, produced, and experienced.

The course investigates the concept of Architecture ex parte (AxP). An AxP is not a mere fragment but a building part that, by virtue of its simultaneous embeddedness within multiple spatial systems (physical, urban network, informational), gains relative autonomy. This autonomy allows it to operate semi-independently and, crucially, to exert influence back upon the systems it inhabits.

Research is organized into multiple interdisciplinary thematic groups (scaled according to student enrollment) that explore AxP in connection with: History, ILSI, Contemporary Public Buildings, Urban Regeneration, and Future Technology.

The Domestication of Infrastructure

Feng Guanyun

More

This study investigates how infrastructure permeates everyday life and reshapes architectural form. Based on urban micro-fulfilment systems, shared kitchens, RV industry reports, digital nomad literature, and mobile dwelling cases , the preliminary research analyzes how logistics networks, food delivery platforms, energy supply systems, and shared facilities have given rise to new spatial typologies. The study finds that with infrastructure entering everyday life and architectural boundaries being redefined, architecture is no longer a complete and fixed entity, but a partial space integrated into urban systems and dependent on external networks.

The Human Factor

Mutual Evolution of Community and City

Lang Enyi

More

This study searches for the microcosm of AxP amid the evolution of communities evolution and development. As people gather not by geography and kinship, but by shared interests, this has gradually formed the vital social foundation for the emergence of AxP.Partial spaces of complete buildings are extracted in various ways across scales, interacting and evolving collaboratively with communities.

The Part-Whole Entanglements

A Technological Timeline of Architecture History

Mariana Gil Florez & Alexandra Maria Sandu

More

This study explores "Architecture ex Parte" (AXP), tracing how discrete elements in architectural history form cohesive systems across time. It unfolds through two timelines: a broad history from the 7th century to the present, and a focused view of four contemporary phases. Through selected projects, it reveals how AXP evolves with technological change, showing architecture as an adaptive system of interconnected parts responding to new modes of living.

Metamorphosis

Space Juxtaposition in European and American Cities

The study examines four cases, notably the Church of San Paolo Converso in Rome, which has undergone numerous functional transformations while preserving its spiritual core.Across these cases runs a shared theme: architecture’s capacity to transform while retaining identity. Beyond functional adaptation, this reflects a deeper return to the discipline’s origin—the idea of shelter.Echoing the primitive hut, these projects do not replicate the archetype but reinterpret it through change. Spaces evolve to meet new demands while preserving their essential role as places of support and refuge.

Shift? Shifted!

Spaces in Conversation

Xin Mei

More

This chapter examines designs with movable spatial partitions. The interactive mutability of partial architecture originates from continuous dialogue between people and space. When users perform specific operations, these actions trigger instant reorganization of spatial attributes. This action-response mechanism redefines the relationship between people and space: architecture transforms from a static object into a dynamic system capable of understanding intentions and providing real-time feedback. Each case demonstrates that this immediate responsiveness gives architecture true vitality.

Setting the Pivot

Micro-Renewal by TM Studio

程照 Cheng Zhao

More

This study focuses on Ziyunzhai Studio (TM Studio), led by Tong Ming, which operates beyond conventional practice as both designer and operator, transforming micro-renewal into sustainable paradigms. Through “Setting the Pivot,” it activates key spatial nodes with cultural and social programs, turning static spaces into urban catalysts.

This chapter reads its work through AxP (Architecture ex Parte), tracing a path from the baseline of Changli Yuan to three pivotal interventions: No. 37 Donghu Road, No. 109 Guizhou Road, and No. 1846 Huaihai Road (Wukang Mansion).

Urban Nomadism

Atelier Archmixing as a Probe into the City

Caio Junio Pollastro

More

I focus on Archmixing as its "New Year, New Office" project embodies AxP—architecture as a living system of interrelated, adaptable parts. Each office acts as both fragment and whole: a self-contained experiment within a continuous spatial narrative of reuse, hybridity, and collective practice.Through iterative transformation, the project blurs boundaries between architecture, use, and research, revealing how meaning emerges not from a fixed form, but from the evolving relations among space, activity, and time.

The Blending Moment

Tian Zifang's Critical Space Transition

Zhang Ruiping

More

Shanghai Tianzifang has a very special and brief stage in its development process, which we call the 'AxP moment'. This stage began in 1998 when artists began to settle in and lasted until around 2004 when the "housing reform to non-agricultural" policy became popular. At this time, Tianzifang is neither a purely residential area nor a mature commercial district, it is in a typical state of "chaotic coexistence ". This stage is a transitional and uncertain critical state. The AxP moment in Tianzifang is precisely such a dynamic and creative "between" moment before moving from the old order to the new order.

The Wukang Mania

Architecture as a Digital Image

Wang Shilong

More

The rise of Wukang Mansion as an online icon reveals how an AxP can detach from its physical origin and operate independently. From inherent qualities to media amplification, the building is distilled into a symbolic, shareable fragment whose image assumes new cultural roles, reshaping how the real space is perceived and used. This case suggests that in the age of social media, architectural meaning no longer resides solely in form or function, but in the reproducible image and its cross-system influence—key to understanding contemporary urban production and consumption.

Immersive Theatre and the Economy of Experience

Li Yiming

More

This study focuses on experiential architecture, covering expositions, pop-up events, and immersive theaters. Taking the immersive drama Sleep No More as a case study, it analyzes in detail its spatial and experiential organization. The research reveals that space demonstrates richness and variability as an event.

More

This chapter centers on people as the core of architecture, mapping the practice landscape of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Design. It presents the Minhang and Xuhui campuses, Huigu Building, and outstanding faculty including Dean Ruan Xing, Zhuang Shen, Du Chunyu and other scholars, their teaching, research, and design practices across urban and rural projects. It reveals the interdependent bond between people and architecture—people weave spatial narratives and urban connections, while architecture shapes daily routines. By documenting practitioners’ trajectories, it rethinks architecture as a living, human-centered practice.

TESTIMEONIALS

Zhuang Shen

This research-intensive studio was designed as a deep dive into the systemic logic of spatial production. Our aim was to push students beyond the surface, helping them grasp the intricate web of factors that define "space" and thereby broadening their intellectual landscape. I was deeply impressed by how the students navigated this theme through diverse lenses—be it history, human agency, or the subtle interplay of media and behavior.

Wu Hongde

It has been a great joy to witness the unprecedented diversity in this year’s cohort, particularly with the infusion of international perspectives. The final result transcends a mere academic report; it has evolved into what we envisioned as a 'boogazine'—a format championed by Rem Koolhaas to capture a sophisticated hybrid of a book’s intellectual depth and a magazine’s visual energy. I sincerely hope that every participant found genuine intellectual joy in this journey of discovery.

The research of this course has helped me understand more clearly the correct thinking and approach to research. Its significance lies not only in the concept of AxP itself or a case study, but also in mastering the attitudes, principles and methods that research should follow, as well as in viewing architecture and even the entire world from such a unique perspective as AxP.

Lang Enyi
