Project 1:A beach club for Haitangwan, Hainan – experimenting with Ai design tools
Professor: Johann v. Mansberg
Project Introduction
This course adopts the design of a beach club along the coastline of Haitang Bay, Sanya, Hainan as the practical project. Taking an approachable coastal spatial scenario as the carrier, it guides students to interact proactively with cutting-edge AI design tools, and explores the integration paradigm of human wisdom and artificial intelligence throughout the whole process of design iteration and scheme presentation. The course establishes in-depth cooperation with an artificial intelligence software service provider in Shenzhen. It grants access to the AIRIlab platform and delivers professional technical guidance, constructing an open experimental classroom. It leads students to maintain rational thinking on AI design and helps them build a design thinking system compatible with the digital era.
The core philosophies of AI collaborative design are summarized from a critical perspective:
1. Collaboration with AI is essentially a two-way dialogue. Effective interaction requires designers to integrate professional technical capability with cultural responsibility.
2. AI serves as an interactive creative tool rather than merely a platform for rapid image generation. Moderate abstract thinking can broaden the boundaries of design possibilities.
3. Outstanding designers of the future will uphold pure curiosity and cultural persistence, and take the lead in shaping design trends amid massive alternative proposals.

The design takes the ouroboros as the main design element for divergence, extracting circular elements to form an infinity symbol, echoing the ebb and flow of tides and the changing seasons, symbolizing the cycle of life and death of all things, and creating a dynamic rhythm of perpetual life within the space. The overall architecture stretches across the rainforest and the sandy coast, expressing a cycle of life, while also serving as a critique and hope regarding water pollution and deforestation, calling on people to cherish and protect the environment. In addition, the ring represents the wholeness and infinite possibilities of the universe, aiming to provide users with a complete and harmonious space, helping them regain a sense of inner peace and belonging.

This project is located between the beach and the coconut grove. It takes the naturally growing shells in the ocean as its design inspiration, drawing on the romantic imagery of "pearls born from shells, shells born from the sea" to create a tourist rest and entertainment space that coexists with the coastal environment. The architectural form is derived from the organic outline of scallops, with a double-shell interlocking shape that echoes the coastal scenery. The pure white curved shell-like exterior resembles both shells polished by the waves and sails raised by the seaside breeze, dissolving the boundary between the building and nature with its gentle organic form and becoming a landmark landscape node on the beach.

The boat-shaped house, a spiritual vessel of the Li ancestors' maritime migration, features an arched thatched roof resembling an upturned boat hull. It not only carries the historical memory of ethnic migration but also embodies the construction wisdom adapted to Hainan's high temperatures, high humidity, and typhoon-prone environment. Three boat-shaped house units are arranged linearly along the beach, forming a progressive spatial sequence: facing the sea, they serve as a core interface for viewing, resting, and social interaction. The architecture inherits the spatial gene of "front porch and rear chamber" from traditional boat-shaped houses, while large glass panels introduce sweeping views of the sea and coconut groves, achieving a fusion of traditional forms with contemporary transparency. External platforms extend onto the sand, connecting lounge chair areas, hammock zones, and surfing activity areas, translating the "sheltering" quality of Li boat houses into the "openness" of coastal resort living, allowing architecture to become a medium for interaction between humans and nature.

The design takes temperature compensation as the core strategy, abandoning the initially overly austere minimalist industrial context, and uses a heterogeneous material nesting approach to construct a four-layer clear material functional system: the bottom layer uses raw reinforced concrete as an anchoring base to ensure structural stability on the complex coastal terrain; the middle layer uses a polished chrome steel branch grid as the supporting skeleton to achieve large-span cantilevering and a transparent space; the core functional area nests warm wooden modular units, using a warm texture to neutralize the cold hardness of metal and concrete, while optimizing the acoustic environment of the music space; the outer enclosure uses high-transparency glass panels to blur boundaries, and the top layer is covered with a parametric metal fish-scale canopy, providing both sunshade function and light and shadow narrative effects.

This design addresses the dark, polluted "grey space" beneath overpasses with a modular ecological solution integrating vertical greening, air purification, and intelligent lighting. High-strength ropes suspend adjustable terra-cotta water storage disks, guiding climbing plants to transform concrete pillars into green barriers that are easy to install and maintain. The lush green wall captures dust and exhaust fumes, while plant transpiration and water evaporation increase humidity and reduce temperature, improving the microclimate.Embedded soft lighting provides safe nighttime illumination. This flexible ecological intervention turns the barren underpass into a living, breathing green corridor of light and shadow.

This study takes Beijing subway stations as a sample and, through a combination of field surveys, statistical analysis, and comparative research, conducts the first systematic network-wide statistical study of art design in the Beijing subway. It establishes an analytical framework of 'underground space constraints—environmental art strategies—comfort evaluation.' The study finds that the coverage of public art in the Beijing subway shows a stepwise increase, with a significant differentiation between old and new lines. Traditional murals dominate the forms of art, and spatial distribution is concentrated in the station halls. Artistic design elements such as lighting, materials, color, and greenery can effectively enhance visual and psychological comfort, and reasonable design can also reduce passengers' navigation time. The 'design elements—comfort' correlation analysis model proposed in this paper provides an evidence-based scientific basis for subway environmental art design and suggests optimization pathways for improving the quality of urban rail transit public spaces in China.
