Xu Circle centers on the International Maternal and Child Hospital, forming a circular health ecosystem.
The design integrates a new medical-grade commercial complex (New 600 Retail Building), renovated existing Pacific Department Store, maternal-infant retail zones, and a health park, interconnected by skybridges and healing trails.
Programmatic innovations address regional gaps: the hospital’s medical economy activates commercial spaces, aggregated maternal-infant programs revitalize garden villa retail areas, and the Women's Federation Cultural Park establishes a female-centric artistic landmark, redefining a child- and women-friendly urban paradigm.

方案概述|Summary of Scheme(上下滑动)
Our project is based on reflection on the fast-paced commercial expansion, with the core of guiding cities and commerce to "slow down" and striving to "edit cities" in a gentle but precise way.
Our research began in grand Xujiahui, to the urban slow transit route of Tianping Road and Tianyaoqiao Road, and then to the points and interfaces of Tianping Road, hoping to understand the city through detailed analysis and research at each level.
Our design takes Tianping Road as a sample, aiming at a series of problems related to its commercial interface, and using the acupuncture style update strategy, to create a more refined and humanized slow travel experience in community commerce.

方案概述|Summary of Scheme(上下滑动)
Pulse:
首先是运动Pulse,通过智慧跑道、街头健身区等设施营造全民运动氛围;
其次是文化Pulse,通过优化历史建筑界面、提升文化设施可达性、植入数字导览系统,让徐家汇百年海派文化触手可及;
We have taken North Caoxi Road as the link to create Shanghai's first "Sports and Vitality Business Corridor." By enhancing the spaces on both sides of North Caoxi Road, we connect Xuhui Park, the core area of the Xujiahui Center, and the Xuhui Sports Park, forming a vibrant district that can switch between "event" and "daily" modes. While retaining the core commercial functions, we have introduced three distinctive Pulses:
First is the“Sports Puls”, which creates a fitness atmosphere for all through smart running tracks and street fitness zones.
Second is the “Culture Pulse”, which makes the century-old Shanghainese culture of Xujiahui easily accessible by optimizing the interfaces of historical buildings, improving the accessibility of cultural facilities, and integrating digital guide systems.
Third is the “Commerce Pulse”, which introduces sports-themed retail and healthy dining to create unique consumer experiences.
This organic integration of "sports + culture + commerce" not only naturally integrates a healthy lifestyle into the urban fabric but also transforms North Caoxi Road into a model district that showcases the unique charm of Xujiahui, characterized by its blend of Chinese and Western elements and the fusion of old and new. This approach achieves a dual enhancement of social benefits and commercial value.
Summary of Critics

Slide to view
方案概述|Summary of Scheme(上下滑动)
Addressing the pain points of urban functional imbalance, this plan takes “Cultural Gene Activation” as its core, pioneering a “X + Museum” dual-engine model to promote the value rebirth of existing spaces. We select potential locations such as outstanding historical buildings, underground passages, and idle commercial spaces. Through three thematic axes – science and education, film and audio, and craftsmanship – we deeply embed Shanghai-style culture, Xu Guangqi’s scientific spirit, the auditory and visual memories of the film studio, and the craftsmanship heritage of Tushanwan into commercial and office spaces. We replace traditional commercial filling with “culturally curated renewal,” achieving a deep symbiosis between historical genes and contemporary consumption. Ultimately, we aim to build a “museum everywhere” cultural and commercial ecosystem, allowing Xujiahui to advance from a “commercial landmark” to a “Shanghai-style cultural spirit coordinate.”
Summary of Critics

Slide to view
方案概述|Summary of Scheme(上下滑动)
This proposal takes Hengshan Road as a key link, connecting the Hengfu Music District with the Xujiahui commercial area to achieve functional complementarity. Focusing on the ‘Public Space+’ strategy, it aims to activate the street through three dimensions: greening upgrades, commercial revitalization, and cultural event integration. By overlaying diverse functions, the proposal seeks to awaken the historical character of the street, transforming Hengshan Road into a shared public corridor that carries cultural memory and sparks contemporary vitality.
Summary of Critics
This course began with urban walks and urban observations, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of the Xujiahui area. Among various factors, we chose to focus on health and maternity as our entry point. The more we researched, the more we discovered how many related cultural and ecological elements were already present in this area. Design is not a source-less spring but rather a thoughtful consideration of the connections in every place.
GE Zhiyang
This semester focuses on the urban slow transit system to carry out the design and research of Xujiahui commercial core area, with the concept of "urban acupuncture" throughout the whole process. During the eight week field survey, we used methods such as behavioral annotation and thermal analysis to decode the spatial context, and finally stitched the walking network in a micro update manner. When the design scheme transformed the divided streets into poetic corridors, I realized that urban design needs to find a balance between the shadow of Chinese parasol trees and the commercial noise, and deeply felt the healing power of design for urban life.
HUANG Runjie
The scope of this urban design course is the Greater Xujiahui area. Our group is focusing on the study of the slow transit system. We have conducted extensive site analysis, which has deepened our understanding of Xujiahui. Our design scope has been further narrowed down to Tianping Road, where we are adopting the urban acupuncture approach to make micro-updates based on the slow traffic system. We hope to solve the problem of the commercial disconnection between the Wukang Apartment and the Shanghai Stadium and to revitalize the commerce on Tianping Road. We have also summarized the “Eleven Acupuncture Strategies,” which we hope can serve as a reference for urban renewal.

This studio (Core Design-2) wasn't just a course—it was a full-on journey. From day one, everything felt well-paced and intentional. The deadlines pushed us, but the structure gave us space to explore. We had our stressed-out moments (trust!), but the professors always knew when to nudge us back on track. Somewhere between the first draft and the final board, we found not just our project—but a voice. We're proud of what we created, not just as a design, but as a story of what cities could be. Huge thanks to our amazing professors, the guest critics, and the university for giving us this platform. And honestly? Xujiahui went from just a site on paper to a memory we'll carry.
Monica
This course takes the Xujiahui Center as the real-world site. Through field research and analysis, it guides us to identify problems and solve them using urban design methods. In this process, I have come to deeply understand that urban design is not a single-dimensional plan, but a complex system of multi-dimensional coordination. It involves not only the renewal of architecture and business formats, but more importantly, the activation of commercial atmosphere through event planning and crowd engagement. This approach of starting from reality and thinking multi-dimensionally has given us a more comprehensive understanding of urban design.

During the eight-week urban design course, we used Xujiahui as a practical case study, exploring multi-dimensional paths for urban renewal from street surveys to scheme design. The course focused on issues such as public space optimization, commercial scene iteration, cultural heritage revitalization, and transportation organization optimization. This allowed us to deeply understand that urban renewal is not only the transformation of physical space but also requires attention to the reconstruction of social relationships and the continuation of local culture. In practice, our group attempted to translate the blurred cultural characteristics of Xujiahui into a perceptible spatial language, while also considering how to balance protection and development, commercial needs, and community participation. With the guidance of our instructors, we learned to integrate diverse demands with systemic thinking and use lightweight strategies to stimulate public co-creation potential. This experience made us realize that the value of design lies not only in the scheme itself but also in providing an extensible framework and possibilities for the city’s future. Thank you to all the instructors for broadening our cognitive boundaries with their professional perspectives. In the future, we will continue to deepen our understanding of urban complexity through practice.

Through the study of this course, we have gained a deeper understanding of public Spaces and have also better appreciated the unique charm they carry in urban life. Whether it is the design of urban squares or streets, the core purpose is to enable citizens to integrate into and enjoy urban life more conveniently and comfortably. Nowadays, urban public governance is constantly exploring differentiated designs to respond to diverse social demands, and this has made me more deeply realize the power of urban design - this pursuit of humanistic care and spatial quality is precisely the direction we strive for.
